The people (word people used loosly) behind this great country of ours need a major kick up their ass, what are they thinking approving the sale and manufacture of electric shock dog collars?
Many months ago I (and many of my friends along with thousands of others) signed a petition to prevent the manufacture and sale of electric shock dog collars. Now I don`t think any sane human being would need any explanation as to why I signed the petition.
Yesterday we received a response from the Prime Minister, here is his response…
“The Government recognises that many people are concerned about electric shock collar training devices and their potential for misuse, particularly collars operated by remote hand-held controls. It is equally aware there are others who are convinced that they have a place in training animals where other methods have failed and the alternative might be worse – possibly destruction of the animal in some rare cases…
…There are no plans at present to ban the sale and use of any electronic training aids for animals, including the ‘electric shock collars’. For many years the Protection of Animals Act 1911 made it an offence to cause unnecessary suffering to a domestic or captive animal. However, the Government is not aware of any prosecutions under the 1911 Act in relation to the use or misuse of electronic training collars…
…While we are aware of a number of scientific studies on electric shock collars, Defra considers that to date those studies published in this area are not sufficiently robust and that the evidence base needs to be built on before consideration can be given to either banning or regulating their use. The government is not prepared to do this unless there is clear evidence that these devices in themselves are harmful to welfare.”
The response in full can be found here.
I very rarely swear, but on this occasion; YOU FUCKING IDIOTS! Well done government for recognising that an electric shock dog collar may be misused, however until you have proof that they are misused you won`t do anything about it. And on their comment that there is no proof that electric shock dog collars are harmful, you bunch of friggin morons! Of course anything that sends an electric shock through a neck or a dog or any creature is going to be fucking painful!
The government rarely makes sensible decisions, there are many people who would like to train the MP’s into making correct decisions, may I suggest an electric shock neck tie?

A. I can’t believe these things are allowed
B. What kind of a person would even think about using one on an animal anyway – idiots!
Perhaps the government minister who approved them would think diffently if forced to wear one himself for a day. I would be more than happy to give him a zap and see how he likes it!
I found your blog via Google while searching for dog rescue and your post regarding ric shock dog collar approved by government at David Kendall looks very interesting for me
I have to say, that I could not agree with you in 100% regarding ric shock dog collar approved by government at David Kendall, but it’s just my opinion, which could be wrong
This is totally UNACCEPTABLE and a form of cruelty to dogs!

re. shock collars, SHOCK HORROR – cruel in the extreme – only patience and understanding are needed in any form of training!
Hi…I Googled for dog adoption, but found your page about ric shock dog collar approved by government at David Kendall…and have to say thanks. nice read.
Let’s say you have a dog that is training really well except for one thing he / she can’t get… shutting off the ears and running off!. If the collar is used in extreme moderation and only when necessary to check this kind of behavioural problem then it will only take a couple of zaps before they get the message. In summary they should only be issued to trustworthy handlers by experienced handlers / trainers.
I’m horrified that this type of colar is now being used to stop dogs barking. I was considering becoming an affiliate of a UK pet shop, Pet Supermarket, until I found that their anti bark collars included collars that deliver a shock to the dog. The website doesn’t even make this clear. It just says the dog gets a correction. This type of advertising should be made illegal and people who have a genuine problem with a barking dog and who may be desperate really need to know exactly what it is they are buying and what they will be doing to their pet.
i 100% agree with the stupid notion of barking collars, my god what sort of society are we in if people dont think that a dog’s nature is to bark! i am looking at these collars after seeing one in use today while walkin my dog, they dont actually look or even feel that painfull after asking the guy happily showed the force on my right hand it made me jump slightly but did not hurt, i was wondering what you thought on using these on aggresive dogs to help curb the need to fight with other dogs? is it not ok to use in this case if a) it can help stop a dog attacking another dog and posibly b)correcting this behaviour will help to make this dogs life happier (and in severe cases stop a destruction order on an animal?
You do have to look at both sides of every argument, yes these collars have scope for abuse but could they help correct and happier a dogs life and others around them? ie yes it is unpleasant but if it improves the life of the dog in the long term and indeed other dogs and people around the ‘problem dog’ is it worth it? i would just like to remind anyone reading this i have not used these collars only saw one in use today
Seems to me like your all so against these collars! ok then so if i were to use one of these on my dog as a backup precaution, lets say one day the gate is left open by mistake, it happens no matter how careful we are! can we at least agree on that? if this collar then kicks in as the back up precaution and stops the dog from running through the gate and straight into a busy main road and being killed, do you not think that a small shock to keep him away from almost certain death is in this case worth it and not cruel in anyway!. You can argue till your blue in the face about people that may missuse these collars but that doesnt mean that the idea behind them is cruel its just the people who may be missusing using them that are. Banning the sale of them is not the answer, used correctly a device like this could prevent a potential accident which nobody would ever want to happen to their best friend.
Surely the best solution is to train your dog not to run out the of the gate?
I own three dogs two of which have a high prey drive, after one of the dogs had an accident chasing a rabbit, I decided to use an electric collar, soon they associated the chasing of cars cyclists & other animals with the shock. I tried the collar on myself & the setting does not have to be painful & as the collar also has a ‘beep’ only setting which they soon learnt to respond to the noise only. All my dogs are now walked off lead under full control & two years later they still remeber the lesson & I have never used the collar again. the alternative would have been to keep these dogs on a lead in order to keep them & other people safe.
This is a very emotive subject, but the basic argument is intriniscally misleading.
I purchased an electric ’shock’ dog collar as a last resort to one of my dogs that was totally uncontrollable. In the house he was perfection, docile, played with the kids – on the lead he turned into a Tazmanian Devil. I took him to obedience classes, had a Dog Whisperer visit – no change. So I invested in one the collars in question.
What must be noted here is that I have a TENS machine for severe shoulder problems. I regularly use it on full power so am fairly conversant with being ’shocked’. Upon arrival of the collar I immediately tried it on myself – it is extremely mild – extremely.
Having used it just six times (six ’shocks’) – over a period of a week – my dog’s behaviour has altered dramatically and with no obvious side-effects or problems. I thoroughly recommend its use. Like a kitchen knife in the wrong hands, of course it could be abused, the key is to make it harmless and store it safely when not being used.
OH IT DOESN’T HARM THEM DOES IT!?
Well how about we put an ekectric collar on you!
See how you feel, dogs are pets for loving and caring! Not that type of cruetly!
I am very much against this, and I’m gonna make a group on bebo or facebook for people who are with me!
It may tame the animal but a dog should NOT be tamed in that way, it’s horrible and cruel!
Whoever uses one go to hell, ANIMAL ABUSER!
Excuse me Darrell, YOU are way out of line. I have two wonderful dogs whom I love and consider them my ‘kids’. One of them I have taken to several dog classes, worked with her for many hours.
Rather than giving her up to the shelter, I was desperate for a method to help control her barking at neighbors and their dogs.
I purchased a barking collar at Petsmart and only after a few barking sessions, she no longer barks leading to less and less time having to wear this bark collar.
If the right person uses this dog collar and understand that it’s not a permanent fix and has their dog wear it minimal amount of time, it IS a humane training tool.
Both my dog and myself are happier, she plays with me more and responds to my verbal commands (off the collar) because she knows I’m not mad at her so much!
So Darrell, don’t start typing about a bunch of shit you know nothing about.
I have two lovely and docile jack russells around the house, however when i take them out on the lead, they turn into serial killers and have attacked each other on occasions costing hundreds in vets bills. They have been to training classes, where we were told to muzzle them and sit in the corner. I have had a behavioural expert round the house, who wished me luck and only took 70 pounds from me instead of the 120 he wanted. They regularly lunge for passing walkers and dogs. I have to walk them muzzled and on harnesses, they are not allowed off the lead, due to the death of a springer spaniel at the local park last year, so what am i to do? Have them destroyed, or can i responsibly attempt the use of a collar???
Whats the best option seeing as all you dog “lovers” seem to know best???
So Marc do you think your Jack Russells are fight or flight? Only joking!
What did the ‘expert’ say? It sounds to me like your dogs need reminding that you are the leader and that they do not need to protect you from other dangers such as other dogs. Google Jan Fennell and look at her techniques, I can`t say I agree with all of her practices but choose what you are comfortable with and go for those, but most of all keep it up until it is routine for you and your dogs.
If they are still loons when they are outside a few months down the line then a less extreme collar than electric is a citronella collar http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=citronella collar .
A quick spray and they will stop what they are doing and think WTF! In that split second their focus is off whatever they were doing you can issue your command.
What do others think?
HI, MY NAME IS KERRY AND I HAVE A GREAT DANE DOG CALLED INDIE WHOS IS 4 YEARS OLD.
I HAD ALWAYS DREAMPT OF ONE DAY OWNING A DANE RIGHT FROM WHEN I WAS A YOUNG GIRL. ON THE WHOLE I THINK YOU WILL AGREE THAT DANES ARE GENTLE GIANTS. SEVERAL VETS HAVE TOLD ME THAT THE HARLEQUIN IS THE EXCEPTION TO THE RULE. APPARANTLY IT IS SOMETHING IN THE BREEDING OF THEM THAT MAKES THEM ‘CRACKERS’. I DIDN’T BELIEVE THIS AT FIRST BUT AS HE WAS GROWING OLDER HIS DOMINANCE WAS THAT BAD THAT I DECIDED TO HAVE HIM CASTRATED. HE WAS ALSO AT 1 YEAR OLD BECOMING QUITE AGGRESSIVE. I HAD DONE EVERYTHING BY THE BOOK TO TRAIN HIM. I WASN’T SOFT WITH HIM (MAYBE A BIT AT FIRST BUT THAT SOON CHANGED!) AND WALKS SOON BECAME HORRENDOUS. HE SEES RED 9 TIMES OUT OF 10 WHEN HE SPOTS OTHER DOGS AND I FIND IT HARD TO CONTROL HIM EVEN WITH A HEAD HALTER ON. HE JUMPS IN THE AIR, TOWARDS THE CARS, TOWARDS PEOPLE. HE GETS THAT INCENSED THAT ANY TRAINING HE HAS HAD JUST GOES COMPLETELEY OUT OF THE WINDOW. HE BECOMES QUITE CRAZEY AND EVEN FOAMS AT THE MOUTH SOMETIMES WITH ANGER. YESTERDAY TWO LADIES WITH TWO DOGS WERE WALKING TOWARDS US AND HE IMMEDIATELEY WENT CRAZEY. I HAD A REAL JOB TO HOLD HIM AND BECAUSE I WAS HOLDING HIS LEAD QUITE CLOSE TO HIS HEAD IT CAME UNATTACHED FROM THE HALTER AND FOR A FEW SECONDS I WAS LEFT WITH A DOG OFF THE LEAD THAT WAS GOING MENTAL! I QUICKLY MANAGED TO GRAB HIS COLLAR AND HAD TO PUT EVERYTHING ID GOT INTO RESTRAINING MY DOG. LUCKILY WE MANAGED TO NARROWLY ESCAPE WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN AN EVEN WORSE SITUATION. HE LAUNCHES HIMSELF AT THE ODD PERSON AS HE WALKS PAST. IVE TRIED TO SEE IF I CAN NOTICE WHAT IT IS ABOUT THE PERSON WHEN HE DOES IT BUT THERE IS NO PATTERN OCCURING.
I HAVE READ THE FORUM ON ELECTRIC COLLARS AND ALTHOUGH IN PRINCIPAL I DON’T AGREE WITH THEM I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT I HAVE JUST PURCHASED ONE AS A LAST RESORT. THE SPRAY COLLAR HAD NO EFFECT ON MY DOG WHAT SO EVER! I HAVE HAD TWO DOG SPECIALISTS TO MY HOUSE TO TRY TO SORT HIM OUT BUT HAVENT BEEN SUCCESSFUL AND TRAINING WITH TREATS DOESN’T WORK BECAUSE HE WONT TAKE TREATS WHEN HE IS IN AN AGGRESSIVE STATE OF MIND. TO BE HONEST, JUST WHEN I THOUGHT HE COULDN’T POSSIBLY GET ANY WORSE HE HAS STARTED TO!
I HAVE SPENT ALMOST A YEAR CONTEMPLATING GETTING AN ELECTRONIC COLLAR BECAUSE I DIDN’T REALLY WANT TO GO DOWN THAT PATH BUT FOR US IT REALLY IS THE LAST RESORT BECAUSE I DO UNDERSTAND THAT MY DOG (WHO I ADORE) IS GOING TO GET A SHOCK WHEN HE IS VERY BAD BUT SURELEY THIS IS BETTER THAN HIM BITING SOMEONE OR JUMPING ON SOMEONE OR KILLING SOMEONE!!! I HAVE TO TRY THIS BECAUSE I HAVE RECENTLY READ THAT IT IS ILLEGAL FOR A DOG TO LAUNCH ITSELF TOWARDS SOMEONE AND THE POLICE HAVE A RIGHT TO REMOVE THE DOG. I WOULD BE HEARTBROKEN IF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN .
BUYING AN ELECTRIC COLLAR DOESN’T SIT EASY ON MY CONSCIENCE AT ALL BUT MY DOG REALLY IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN.
ALL I WANT TO SAY REALLY IS DON’T BE TOO QUICK TO JUDGE PEOPLE THAT HAVE USED THE ELECTONIC COLLAR BECAUSE IM SURE THAT IM NOT THE ONLY PERSON THAT HASN’T MADE THIS DECISION LIGHTLY.
I TOOK HIM TRAINING WHEN HE WAS A YOUNG DOG AND HE CAME TOP OF THE CLASS! HE DOESN’T ACTUALLY BEHAVE THIS WAY WHEN HES AWAY FROM HOME WHICH MAKES ME THINK THAT IT IS VERY MUCH A TERRITORIAL THING. I DO BELIEVE THAT IF HE EVER GOT CLOSE ENOUGH TO MY POSTMAN HE WOULD ACTUALLY KILL HIM. A DOG OF TEN STONE ISNT EASY TO HANDLE AT THE BEST OF TIMES AND WHEN HES IN ONE OF HIS RAGES IT MAKES IT EVEN HARDER FOR ME TO CONTROL HIM. THE ANNOYING THING IS THAT MY DOG KNOWS WHATS RIGHT AND WRONG. IVE SPENT ENOUGH TIME TRAINING HIM!
KINDEST REGARDS
KERRY & INDIE
BACK AGAIN! ANOTHER POINT I SUPPOSE IS THAT WHEN MY DOG GOES CRAZEY HE IS WEARING A HEAD HALTER. NOT ONLY DOES THIS BADLY MARK THE BRIDGE OF HIS NOSE EVERY TIME HE HAS A FIT AND CUT INTO HIS SOFT MOUTH BECAUSE IT TIGHTENS SO MUCH, IT COULD ALSO SERIOUSLY DO SOME DAMAGE TO HIS NECK! YE, I PROBABLY AM TRYING TO CONVINCE MYSELF ABOUT THE ELECTRONIC COLLAR BUT I DO HAVE A POINT! ANYWAY, I HAVENT ACTUALLY RECEIVED THE COLLAR AS YET, IM STILL WAITING FOR IT. BYE FOR NOW, KERRY AND INDIE
Hi Kerry
Great Danes suffer the same reputation as many large dogs unfortunately in my opinion. Their sheer size goes against them and many people who do not know dogs mistake size for agression. I do know a few however and they are superb animals once trained, but as you say can be a loon if they feel they are the leader of the pack.
Have you tried a citronella collar or even a pinch collar. The citronella is strange for the dog as it sprays a mist in their face, again not ideal but I think a little less extreme than a shock collar. The pinch collar is like any other collar until they pull at which point the rungs on the collar pull together and pinch the neck of the dog. Imagine someone pinching your neck – quite painful. Although this sounds harsh mother dogs will pinch their puppies necks to bring them into line so it does emulate nature in a way. As soon as the dog lunges the collar pinches, causes pain and they have to stop.
Two suggestions anyway, good luck though and come back and let us know what happens, shock collar or no shock collar.
HI DAVID,
YE, IVE USED THE PINCH COLLAR, HAD NO EFFECT AT ALL. STRANGE I KNOW CUS I AGREE, IT SHOULD DO THE TRICK. I JUST COULDNT HOLD HIM BACK ON IT, IT JUST DIDNT BOTHER HIM AT ALL. IVE ALSO GOT A CITRONELLA SPRAY COLLAR. THIS WORKS FOR MILD BAD BEHAVIOUR BUT IF HES REALLY WORKED UP IT IS USELESS. THE ELECTRONIC COLLAR REALLY HAS BEEN A TOUGH DECISION FOR ME AND THATS THE TRUTH. I DONT THINK ITS THE BEST IDEA NO MORE THAN YOU DO BUT I ALSO FEEL THAT I COULD GET A KNOCK AT THE DOOR ONE DAY INSISTING THAT HE IS PUT TO SLEEP AND I CANT BARE THE THOUGHT OF THAT.
ALSO, STRANGERS OFTEN WALK PAST HIM WITH THEIR HAND HELD OUT READY TO TOUCH HIM. PERSONALLY I WOULD NEVER DO THAT TO A STRANGE DOG BUT A LOT OF PEOPLE DO. SOME PEOPLE HES FINE WITH BUT OTHERS HE WILL LAUNCH AND SNAP AT WHEN THEY DO IT. INDIE IS MY BEST BUDDY AND WITH ME A VERY LOVING, LOYAL AND AFFECTIONATE DOG BUT WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND DOGS IS UNPREDICTABLE. FOR THIS REASON I NO LONGER LET HIM OFF THE LEAD WHEN WERE OUT.
I KNOW THAT THIS DOESNT MAKE IT ANY BETTER BUT I WOULD NEVER USE ANYTHING ON INDIE THAT I WOULDNT BE PREPARED TO TRY ON MYSELF AND IF I THINK IT IS TOO HARSH THEN THERE IS NO WAY THAT IT WOULD GO ANYWHERE NEAR HIM. I JUST WOULDNT BE ABLE TO DO IT. HES KNOWN IN MY AREA AS ‘THE BURTON BEAST’ AND PEOPLE CROSS OVER TO AVOID HIM QUITE OFTEN. I WISH THAT I COULD GET TO THE BOTTOM OF HIS PROBLEMS WITHOUT THE NEED FOR THE COLLAR BUT I REALLY HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING THAT YOU CAN IMAGINE. TO BE HONEST, I AM LIMITED TO WHAT I CAN TRY NOW BECAUSE OF HIS SHEER POWER.
ANYWAY, ENOUGH OF ME RAMBLING ON AND THANKS FOR THE ADVICE AND FOR REPLYING. ILL KEEP IN TOUCH AND LET YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS. I KNOW HOW AGAINST THE COLLARS YOU ARE SO AGAIN. THANKS, KERRY
Well from reading at the top of the list I guess there is only one thing left to do, hold on a minute………..There I’ve taken the shock collars off of my dogs who were happy to be running free on my 5 acres, and not killing the neighbors chickens as they did last year, and put a bullet in each of their heads. Sad,…but look at the good side. Theyre in doggie heaven.
Ps. no food bill….and ….hey I’m going to save on batteries. Thanks for being so right on “cruelty to animal people” I’m going to buy an attack goldfish.
These collars are great. Electronic dog collars do not uses electric shock despite what there name implies but rather vibration. When dealing with a large breed dog with aggressive tendencies this is the best route. Pet owners that use these collars are potentially saving there dogs lives. If their dog ends up getting loose and bites someone the owner might be forced to put the dog down. The shock collars do not seem so cruel when the alternative is ending a dog’s life. I’ll sign a petition in favor of shock collars because I think killing them seems crueler.
Like many people on this site a year ago I too would shout from the roof tops about these cruel shock collars.
My terrier is a lovely dog in the house. Out of the house on walks she is an unpredicatble, sheep worrier. She would take off for no apparent roof tops. Within 18 months this dog had made me cry more times than I would like to remember.
So I tried the trainers, I tried the citronella collars. Nothing worked. I resigned myself that this lovely lttle dog will spend the rest of her life connected to a leash on walks.
Then someone mentioned a shock collar. I said no, they are cruel etc.
Then after her breaking free from her leash, and dissapearing over a busy road for 4 hours I thought I have to give my dog one last try before I tighten the leash and never ever let her off.
I used it 8 times in total. This was at the minimum response level.
My dog is now able to enjoy her walks. She will not die under the wheels of a car, or by a farmer shooting her. I feel I have saved her life and she seems so much happier on walks, running around and playing rather than be connected to a leash.
I understand these collars can be used incorrectly and be abused. But i feel if used in extreme cases to save a dogs life (NOTE: NOT TO STOP BARKING!!!) then i think they can be a valuable tool.
I have changed my mind because I have seen first hand the positive side, but I do understand peoples concerns because as I started off by saying I was one of the people who wanted them banned.
I love my dog and only want the best for her. 8 small shocks compared to 8 more years of off lead happy walks, I think she would agree with me,I made a hard and difficult choice, but ultimatley for my dog it was the right one.
Thank you for your time,
Sarah
I have a very large, very lovley great dane. A year ago a very large, very aggresive labrador went absolutly nuts on him. (Had the labrador had a shock collar maybe that wouldnt have happened?)
Anyway. After this, my dane regretably turned dog aggressive. Weve tried training, haltis, treats, various collars. He just got worse.
With a lot of guilt and desperation we bought a ’shock’ collar. Vowing we would try it on ourselves first. The person above is right – its not a shcok – its a vibration, and it doesnt hurt.
More to the point it workes wonders – even he seems pleased with himself. We only had to use it for a few times, now we just use the warning beeper instead of the actual buzzer.
I really feel that for the right purpose – on agressive dogs – the buzzer collar is a real help. Good for the dog, good for the owner, good for all the other dogs and owners that will now not be scared stiff buy a massive great dane lunging and barking at them. We know his bark is worse than his non existant bite – but other dog walkers dont – and get stressed and scared which escalates the situation into a massive, dangerous drama
with the collar, and a few beeps – no situation develops any more.
I am really pleased that I read ALL of the responses on here, it’s easy to say ‘Oh how cruel’ when you first think of electric shock collars, but having read all the responses I have a much more balanced view. At the moment we have one really well behaved mongrel and one very unruly 9 month old Patterdale pup…she’s kind of learning to be well behaved, but we cant guarantee it 100% lol, but I think these forums are great for information and I hope all those that used them ended up with well behaved dogs, which are a pleasure for all.
One of our Jack Russells, Chester, 1-1/2 years old, was killed in the road yesterday. He was the nicest, most friendly dog anyone could ever want, who let our Heeler pup chew on him. She played rough with him, and he played back but never got aggressive with her or our other dogs. He was just a lover dog. But, he also loved to chase cars, and try as we might, we could not stop him. I especially worried about tractors with implements because he could catch up them, and I am certain that is what got him. Only the evening before I was looking at shock collars, but wasn’t sure which one I needed. Now I wish I had bought anything, even if it was the wrong one. I am sad beyond belief.
Mark
People spout such shit about electronic collars. Yes, they can be used for cruelty, but if I my only motive was to be cruel to my dogs I could just kick them or whack them with a belt, or chain them to a post in my garden and save myself £100.
I have have three well trained and wonderful dogs and have trained them diligently since they were puppies, so why am I researching which electronic collar to buy to use with my working cocker? Because her blueprint is to chase and, whilst this isn’t a problem with swallows that she can’t catch, it is a problem with sheep.
If I don’t nip this in the bud then she’ll be shot in the head by a farmer or have to remain on the lead each time we walk in the mountains. She hates being on the lead making her walk on a lead in the open mountains whilst my other dogs run free is 1000 x more cruel and confusing for her than a couple of 1 second nips to stop her in her tracks when she goes for sheep.
These collars have saved lives and enabled owners to teach their dogs that certain behavours are not acceptable. Do not call responsbile and loving dog owners who’ve done their research ‘cruel’ as you just highlight your own ignorance.
i cant believe idiots want to ban this type of training collar, because it may be misused. why not ban cars, bicycles, alcohol, expenses and the list goes on. if, like a previous writer, i wanted to mistreat my dogs, i would just kick them or tie them up. why waste money when you can do it for free. as yet i havent bought one, but am considering it as my dogs are good dogs but very terratorial in the garden and one barks at anyone coming near the house. to me that is a good thing, but the council disagree. they dont want dogs barking at all…..i dont want some people talking, but that aint gonna happen is it……..so anyway if i dont stop her barking i’ll get fined. and at the very worst the dogs taken off me. so whats better. a shock collar or my dogs getting put down……….you decide……
I have read so much about these shock collars and after so much heart searching i have decided to get one of these collars i too have tried all the techniques taught at the dog training club but after 8 months (my dog stan is 17mths now i rescued him when he was 11mth) i am desperate he is fantastic in the house but outside he takes no notice of me what so ever even with hot roast chicken in my hand. if these collars get the effects they do after just a few uses does anyone have one for sale
Great forum – I have just purchased an electronic collar – my dog gets plenty of exercise, is well trained, very happy and content but when cars or sheep go buy he turns into devil dog! We will use the collar for aversion training following good training principles. If it stops my dog being run down or shot by a farmer its fine by me! I will let you know how it goes… thanks for some great advice and opinions.
I adore your website very much. Will read more. Keep up to great posting on it. ty
I care about your site a lot. Will read all. Keep up to great info on it. ty
Just to echo the comments above – these collars are bought by loving responsible dog owners who want to give their dogs an excellent quality of life. I have a patterdale/springer cross who is lovely in the house but whose flush and kill instinct I simply couldn’t compete with. She has a cracking walk, romping around fields and ditches and copses but no longer goes off doing her own things for 45 minutes at the end of our hour long walk because she gets a scent. The people I bought my collar off were extremely supportive – they recommend that the dog is no less than 12 months old and also acknowledge that the collar is a last resort after traditional reward based training has failed. So the collar is used as part of the escalation process and the warning beep is fundamental. They learn really quickly that it precedes a shock and therefore delivering a shock is rarely necessary. In fact the shock is just that – no lasting pain (of course I have tried it!) which is needed when the dog has the rush of adrenelin. My dog now knows that me shouting “NOW” precedes the beep so I rarely even have to beep. The collars are fantastic – I wouldn’t want to be without it and it is the only thing I have ever felt motivated to write to my MP about. I am dreading my next holiday in Wales!
By and large I don’t post on a person’s blog, but I would just like to mention that this post really compelled me to do so! Thanks for your insightful article.
Super information,I have bookmarked your post, Thank you
